On a crisp November 16th, 2024, the men’s fellowship group took a step back in time with a tour of the iconic Riddel’s Warehouse in Belfast. Built in 1867, this four-story ironmongery warehouse stands as a proud reminder of the city’s industrial heritage.
The group entered through its ornate façade, immediately captivated by the building’s distinctive architecture. Inside, the breathtaking atrium revealed five stories of galleries, supported by sturdy cast iron columns and heavy timber beams, all encircling a stunning glass-roofed courtyard. It wasn’t hard to imagine the energy and activity that once coursed through these halls, as Riddel’s played a vital role in importing and distributing ironmongery across Belfast and beyond.
Their guide brought the building to life with fascinating stories, shedding light on how Riddel’s catered to both domestic and agricultural needs. The Ann Street branch, in particular, served as a hub for the farming community. Remarkably, the warehouse survived a turbulent history, including a series of fire bomb attacks during the Troubles, and still bears the marks of its daily life as a bustling ironmongery centre.
This visit offered more than just a glimpse into the past—it provided a chance to connect with Belfast’s rich industrial legacy. With plans underway to transform Riddel’s Warehouse into a dynamic arts and co-working space, the group left inspired by the potential of this historic treasure to play a key role in the city’s modern revival.
